Our commitment
Nominate A Veteran works to make this website usable by everyone, including people who use a keyboard only, a screen reader, screen-magnification software, voice control, or other assistive technology. We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the recognized standard for public-facing websites.
Accessibility is part of the work, not a final checkbox. We review the site when we add a page or a form, and we fix barriers when they are reported to us.
What we have done
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, with a “skip to content” link and a clearly visible outline on the item you have selected.
- Headings, lists, landmarks, and page regions are marked up so a screen reader can move through a page in a sensible order.
- Every form field has a label. If something is missing or wrong, the message says what to fix, and the message is read aloud by a screen reader.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, so they are easier to press on a phone.
- Text and background colors are tested for contrast, and important information is never shown by color alone.
- Photographs carry descriptions, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
- Animation is limited, and the site respects a “reduce motion” setting on your device.
- Crisis and resource numbers, such as 988, can be tapped to dial on a phone.
- We write in plain language, in short sentences, and we say what a button will do before you press it.
Where we may still fall short
Some of what appears on our pages is not ours to control. The donation and event-ticket forms run through Zeffy, an outside service, and their pages follow their own accessibility practices. Files we post later, such as tax filings or annual reports, may not meet the same standard the day they are uploaded. When that happens, we will provide the same information in an accessible format on request.
If you reach a page that will not work for you, that is a bug, and we want to hear about it.
Tell us about a barrier
Email mhodges0806@gmail.com or use our contact form. Tell us the page and what went wrong, and we will reply and work to fix it. If it involves submitting a nomination and the need is urgent, say so and we will help you another way while the page is being corrected.
Need this information another way
If any part of this site is difficult for you to use, contact us and we will give you what you need in another format, or help you submit a nomination, an honor story, or a question without using the website.
